Nat’l Digital ID Registration Underway in over 40 Centers across Tigray Region

Addis Ababa January 8/2025 (POA)— The national digital identity (ID) registration process, part of Ethiopia’s Fayda Digital ID initiative and supported by biometric technology, is   currently underway in Tigray region at 41 permanent and temporary centers. 

The Fayda Digital ID is a cornerstone of Ethiopia's "Digital Ethiopia 2025" vision.

 It aims to establish a foundation for an accessible, inclusive, and data-driven digital economy.

Fayda is expected to foster trust and contribute to the development of a unified economic community by enabling consistent biometric identification.

 Ethio-Telecom's Northern Region partnering with the National ID Program to this nationwide registration has announced today that the residents of Tigray region are being registered in at 41 centers.

Operations Director of Ethio-Telecom's Northern Region, Mulu Woldeselassie highlighted that the region has been offering digital ID services, including Fayda registration and printing, in Tigray for the past eight months and these services are accessible through 26 permanent centers and 15 mobile units.

Ethio-Telecom is expanding its reach by enabling customers to either visit the centers or utilize mobile registration units deployed to their locations to further enhance accessibility.

According to Mulu, over 235,000 citizens have already received their digital IDs, and the company plans to increase the number of registration centers to accommodate growing demand.

Mulu also noted that awareness campaigns are underway to educate the public about the significance and benefits of the Fayda Digital ID.

In an exclusive interview with ENA, Rahwa Gebreselassie and Tesfaye Gebremeskel, who registered for the Fayda Digital ID, shared their intention to utilize the ID for banking services and passport applications.

They underscored the importance of registration, acknowledging the national ID's utility across a wide range of services.

Other registrants, Yordanos Reda and Lemlem Kidanemariam, highlighted the Fayda ID's crucial role in verifying legal status and facilitating access to both government and private sector services.

 The interviewees collectively emphasized the multifaceted benefits of the national ID service, highlighting its essential nature and the importance of ensuring widespread accessibility.

 The National Digital ID is widely recognized as a crucial tool for supporting the delivery of rapid and reliable services while simultaneously combating fraud and illegal activities.
