Ethiopia's Election as Member of UNHRC Enhances Country's Role in Multilateral Diplomacy

Addis Ababa, January 16, 2025 (ENA)--Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Nebiat Getachew, today highlighted significant diplomatic achievements recorded to ensure the national interest of Ethiopia over the past six months, amidst challenging circumstances.

Ambassador Nebiat, in his press briefing today, highlighted the major activities carried out in foreign relations over the past six months and current diplomatic activities.

He pointed out that tangible results in advancing Ethiopia's national interests over the past six months have been achieved.

He stated that measures have been taken to strengthen Ethiopia's comprehensive ties with neighboring countries, and that it has been possible to ensure recognition of its pivotal role in maintaining peace in the region.

Furthermore, Nebiat stated progress in regional integration, pointing the agreement with South Sudan on road construction and increased electricity supply to Kenya.

During this period, the Spokesperson cited, more than 128 high-level officials' visits have been made, which enabled the strengthening of bilateral relations with countries.


 

He said that these have made it possible to strengthen partnership and to consolidate Ethiopia's long-term interests and current positions.

Ambassador Nebiat, on the other hand, mentioned that Ethiopia's election as a member of the United Nations Human Rights Council is one of the successes of the past six months, adding that this will enhance the country's role in multilateral diplomacy.

Ethiopia has been elected to serve as a member of the United Nations Human Rights Council (HRC) for the term spanning 2025-2027, during the 79th UN General Assembly held in New York.

This election signifies Ethiopia's third term on the Council, having previously held membership from 2013 to 2015 and again from 2016 to 2018.

By obtaining a position among the 47 members of the Human Rights Council, Ethiopia is poised to play a significant role in shaping decisions related to global human rights matters.
